BURNING FOR GOD, SHINING IN MY ACADEMICS: HOW TO LIVE A BALANCED PRODUCTIVE LIFE AS A CHRISTIAN MEDIC.

To the “logical mind”, academic excellence and spiritual vitality may be viewed as mutually exclusive – as two separate and incompatible paths that an individual must carefully choose between, dedicating fully to one while forfeiting the other. For the Christian medic, it is a different narrative altogether. Rather than view these aspects as mutually exclusive, we could leverage spiritual fulfillment as a solid foundation for academic success.

The key lies in integrating faith with studies, regarding them as complementary rather than competing priorities. The Christian medic must approach academic work with a sense of divine purpose, viewing it as a form of worship and service to God.

About living a balanced life, effective time- management and discipline are at the crux of excellence in both spheres. Effective time management entails striking the right balance per time between studies, worship, and personal self-care; setting clear goals; prioritizing tasks based on order of urgency and importance. Discipline

involves sticking to a particular regimen consistently regardless of inconvenience, doing the right thing per time, and avoiding procrastination. Further, conflicts between academic requirements and faith-related activities could arise. In such cases, it is relevant to seek counsel from mentors who have successfully navigated such paths.

Christian medics who master their balance between studies and faith are well-positioned to exemplify the gospel in their field and without. Though it is a tough part to tow, it is feasible to both “burn for God” and “shine academically”, striking a harmonious chord between the calling to heal bodies and the calling to nourish souls.
