Not too Small to SHINE

The will of God is always a bigger thing than we bargain for, but we must believe that whatever it involves, it is good, acceptable and perfect.”  Jim Elliot’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to God’s purpose. His story inspires awe, and his selflessness challenges us to re-evaluate our priorities.  Born on October 8, 1927, Jim was raised in a Christian family and never wavered from his faith. He pursued a career in architecture but chose to respond to God’s higher calling.  At Camp Wycliffe, Jim learned linguistic skills and encountered the Huaorani people who were considered violent and dangerous. He felt an overwhelming desire to evangelize to them. After completing his studies, Jim traveled to Ecuador with his friend, Fleming, intent on sharing the Gospel with the Quechua Indians. They eventually made contact with the Huaorani, using a loudspeaker and gifts to establish a connection.  Jim’s commitment to his mission was unwavering, even when faced with the euphoria of a new marriage. He believed that “those who know the great compassionate heart of God must deny their own loves to share in the expression of His.” His quote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose” resonates deeply.  Tragically, Jim’s life was cut short on January 8, 1956, when he and his companions were killed by Huaorani warriors. Yet, his legacy lives on, inspiring generations to surrender their lives to God’s purpose.  Jim’s story teaches us that life is not about longevity but about living fully for God. He understood that our talents and skills are tools to serve the One who gave them to us. As we reflect on Jim’s life, may we be challenged to reevaluate our priorities and surrender our lives to God’s greater purpose.
