The Unexpected Power of Poetry in Medicine

Poetry and medicine: two seemingly disparate fields, yet both converge in their pursuit of understanding and appreciation for the human experience. Just as poetry explores the depths of human emotion, medicine seeks to heal and comfort the human body. But what happens when thes e two disciplines intersect?  In the hands of a skilled poet, the intricacies of the human body become a canvas of wonder, a testament to God’s magnificent creation. A poem about the circulatory system can evoke a sense of awe at the intricate network of veins and arteries, pumping life-giving blood throughout our bodies. A verse about the human brain can inspire a deeper appreciation for the complex neural networks that govern our thoughts and actions.  Through poetry, we can express the emotional and spiritual aspects of medicine, acknowledging the divine spark that animates every parent. By exploring the emotional impact of illness and healing, poets can foster empathy and understanding between healthcare providers and their parents. A poem about the journey of recovery can inspire hope and resilience, while a verse about the fragility of life can encourage gratitude and appreciation.  In the words of Psalm 139:14, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Poetry can help us reverence the beauty and complexity of God’s creation, even in the face of illness and suffering. By embracing the intersection of poetry and medicine, we can deepen our understanding of the human experience and honor the divine healer who guides our hands.  As a medical student, I believe that poetry can be a powerful tool in our journey to become compassionate and skilled healers. By embracing the art of poetry, we can cultivate empathy, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and wonder of God’s creation.
