When God was speaking to Abraham in Genesis 13:14-17, He promised to give the whole land to him and his descendants as far as his eyes could see. Abraham’s visual field and God’s visual field might have been similar but there would have been a lot of gaps. Abraham’s visual field was not the determining factor of the promise, it was God’s visual field. God’s promise was not going to stop at how much or how far Abraham could see. God was only giving Abraham a sample picture of what he was going to receive. Abraham was limited in what he could see, but God was not because He had the full picture. If God’s promises had stopped at Abraham’s visual field, then it would not be spectacular or extraordinary. Man can only see a little beyond his nose; a little to the right, a little to the left, a little to the front and back, then up and down. That is just how far our eyes can see. It takes faith to totally be able to see what God is saying. Sometimes, we make mistakes in following and trusting God only as far as our eyes can see. We hold God by His word only as much as we can logically comprehend, so, when we get to the distal part of our visual field, there is nothing left for us to see; no more expectations, no more pressing on. We lose our grip on the word that has kept us running over the years and give up and relax, forgetting that we were only able to see a sample, an iota of all that God has in store for us. Getting the whole package requires us to have faith. That is when we can start receiving, when we stop seeing ourselves and what we can do or how much we can make God’s promises for our lives to be fulfilled. The fact that we got to the end of the road, of all that we would see does not mean God has stopped working or we have hit rock bottom. It is for us to focus on Him and truly begin to see as He sees. This is what it means to walk with Him, to trust Him, and to believe that what He has promised us is far beyond our imagination. We do not try to walk with God with our thinking caps on, trying to figure out how everything would play out. We leave that to God and entrust Him with the process. We are assured that He is faithful and has the power to bring to fulfilment all that He has ever promised and ensure that everything works out together for our good. He is capable of bringing it all to pass, even those things we cannot see. Hence, we should never stop at only what we can see but rather fix our gaze on Him, trusting in Him until we begin to see what only He sees.
