As a medical student, it is important to recognize your personality and uniqueness on time. This way you’ll get to understand your strength and weaknesses and you would learn to recognize opportunities and threats to your academics and life at large. An important instance, is knowing your reading and learning pattern and sticking to what works for you. This can only come as a result of a thorough and intentional understanding of yourself.  Let me tell you an interesting story for an example. James can’t read for 6 hours at a stretch. John on the other hand prefers reading for that long, but alone. James and John are best friends and want to read together but they find that whenever they do, they usually leave with an inert feeling of dissatisfaction. John assimilates things slowly and thus reads for longer periods and does so effectively when he reads on his own. James, on the other hand, always feels bored and distracted after 2 hours, and this makes him think he’s not as intelligent as John.  This affected thier performance and kept on going until they were advised by their concerned Class Academic Secretary to read separately and instead only meet to discuss what they’ve read and this was the evident turn around they needed.  Another aspect where it is helpful to understand your uniqueness is where you’d have to strife for balance in your Spiritual, academic, and social life. As a Christian medic these tripod are essential for your relevance before God and man. Gone are the days where it was said that “Medical students don’t have a social life”. The world already is a global village so you just have to find your place in it, and your uniqueness will stand you out rather than fit you in.  Lastly, no man is an island, your uniqueness will attract your kind of people, so surround yourself with likeminded people and mentors in your field and other aspects of life where you’re a bit deficient.to be willing to keep learning and unlearning and the sky as they say will only be your starting point.
