A Call for Restraint

With a heavy heart and deep sadness, we condemn in the strongest terms the despicable acts of harm meted out on citizens whose only crime was to protest against the brutality of the security forces of the country. The brazen attack of citizens under the cover of darkness at the Lekki toll gate by those they trusted to protect them opened a dark phase for us as a nation from which we must quickly exit. Sadly, the consequences of that evil action are already manifest across the country.

Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all Nigerians killed or harmed by hoodlums and law enforcement agents while exercising their rights to peaceful protest.

The resolution of the current crisis requires deep, constructive, and empathetic engagement by the Government to avoid further degeneration into an unmanageable national crisis. We call on the Government to respond responsibly urgently.

Nigeria is destined for greatness. We are confident that God’s will is going to prevail and we are optimistic that a Nigeria we can be proud of will be birthed.

We call for restraint on all attacks on all peaceful protesters and also urge all those protesting to avoid further loss of lives across the country by suspending all protests.

We call on all health workers in the line of duty to be encouraged, brave, and to strengthen those around them. Our country will emerge stronger.

We salute all well-meaning citizens currently doing their part in caring for the whole man with their services and resources. We urge you not to relent in supporting however you can. Be the Good Samaritan; whatever services you can render to the suffering citizens, do so generously. Help the wounded, give to the needy, open your heart and arms in these times. As in a cold world, a little warmth will make all the difference.

Above all, we call on you to continue praying even more intensely and not to stop declaring peace for Nigeria. The prayer of a righteous man still avails much.

As we continue to individually and collectively pursue the establishment of God’s Kingdom of peace and justice, let us be deliberate to seek justice in our daily dealings, and to show compassion to those we care for as we continue to fulfill our mandate of caring for the whole man.
